CAUTION: *Drivers localized in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean and Japanese will not be available on the Web until mid- to late-August.
NOTE: There are two options for customers looking for PostScript (R) driver support in Windows 2000. For customers employing "Point and Print" functionality in their environment, HP recommends using the Point and Print bundles. These bundles are available for certain products from the individual product download pages. These bundles contain the drivers only for Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 and 2000. For customers who are not in an environment employing "Point and Print," HP recommends using the PostScript drivers available on the Windows 2000 OS CD-ROM. These are the latest PostScript drivers with the printer specific PPD.
Choosing a Microsoft or HP LaserJet printer driver
PCL drivers
Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer customers will have full printer software support for Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server. To prepare for the release of Windows 2000, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft have collaborated to provide basic printing support directly within the Windows 2000 operating system. Windows 2000 offers a new and robust PCL5 printer driver architecture, Unidrive5, that both Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft use to support all current monochrome and color HP LaserJet products.
Support for the HP LaserJet 1100 and HP LaserJet 3100 products will be available directly from Hewlett-Packard.
In addition, the Microsoft drivers included in Windows 2000 have a common user interface across all printer devices and fulfill many printing needs. Finally, the Microsoft printer drivers support "metafile spooling," which may be important when running in a Windows Terminal Server environment. These drivers will support all regional languages covered by Windows 2000.
Hewlett-Packard is updating its Windows NT 4.0 drivers in most languages for all HP LaserJet printers, back to the HP LaserJet 4 family printers. These printer drivers will operate in both Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 to provide "Point and Print" support between Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. These drivers also support all the most advanced features of the HP LaserJet printers.
Print quality and performance have also been optimized, using the latest features of HP's standard printer language PCL, ColorSmart technology, and other image rendering enhancements. Finally, these drivers have a common user interface to ensure consistency and familiarity across Windows operating system platforms. For these reasons, Hewlett-Packard recommends HP LaserJet Printer drivers for our customers that want to get the most from their HP LaserJet printers.
For networked printers, HP's printer drivers are the recommended choice for "Point and Print" functionality between Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. "Point and Print" allows a system administrator to automatically provide printing to a shared printer on a server.
PostScript drivers
PostScript printing is also fully supported by both Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft to meet the industry standards for all HP LaserJet printers equipped with this Page Description Language (PDL). PostScript printing is also supported for HP LaserJet printers in the Windows 2000 Terminal Server environment.
There are two options for customers looking for PostScript driver support in Windows 2000. For those employing "Point and Print" functionality in their environment, HP recommends using the PostScript drivers that are available for Windows NT 4.0. These drivers are available from the individual product download pages.
For customers who are not in an environment employing "Point and Print", HP recommends using the PostScript drivers available on the Windows 2000 OS CD-ROM. These are the latest PostScript drivers with the printer specific PPD.
Following is an overview of the process for upgrading the HP LaserJet printer drivers on Windows 2000.
Upgrading to Windows 2000
Upgrade recommendations
Prior to upgrading to Windows 2000 from any other Windows operating system, HP recommends uninstalling all HP printer drivers and then reinstalling the latest HP drivers for Windows 2000. The following sections describe the behavior if the drivers are not uninstalled prior to upgrading the Windows 2000 operating system.
Upgrading from Windows 95 or Windows 98
HP LaserJet Windows 9x drivers, whether from Microsoft or HP, are not compatible with the Windows 2000 operating system. Therefore, as part of the upgrade process, Microsoft attempts to map the Windows 9x printers to the appropriate drivers provided with Windows 2000. There are two possible scenarios:
- The HP or Microsoft driver has an exact name match with a driver provided with Windows 2000 and will be upgraded to the equivalent Unidrive5 or PostScript5 driver without user intervention.
- The HP driver does not have an exact name match with any of the drivers provided in Windows 2000, and these drivers will not be carried through the upgrade process. Go to the Customer Care Web site to search for Windows 2000 drivers for the HP LaserJet product.
Exact name match (no user intervention)
If the Windows 9x driver on the system is a Microsoft driver, or is an HP driver and has an exact name match for an equivalent Microsoft Unidrive5 or PostScript5 Windows 2000 driver, then it will be upgraded to the driver without any user intervention. The following list describes HP drivers that will be upgraded to the appropriate Microsoft Unidrive5 or PostScript5 Windows 2000 driver during the Windows 95/98 to Windows 2000 operating system upgrade. Once the upgrade is complete, the same printer icons will appear in the Printers folder; however, the following drivers will be replaced with the appropriate Microsoft driver.

The following Windows 9x HP printer drivers do not have an exact Microsoft Unidrive5-based driver model name match in Windows 2000. This means they will not be upgraded to a Windows 2000 driver. The upgrade program will create a report with a list of devices and software that was not upgraded. If any of the drivers listed below are installed on the Windows 9x system, the names should appear in the upgrade report. Icons for these models will not appear in the Printer folder on Windows 2000 once the upgrade is completed.

Microsoft PostScript drivers (no user intervention required)
HP LaserJet PostScript drivers for NT 4.0 are produced by Microsoft with an HP configuration file. As a result, upgrading these drivers in Windows 2000 does not require any user intervention. Microsoft includes a new version of their PostScript driver in Windows 2000 (PostScript5). HP has worked extensively with Microsoft to ensure that all PostScript printers and available features are supported in Windows 2000. The following list of HP NT 4.0 PostScript drivers will be automatically upgraded to Windows 2000 PostScript5 drivers. However, due to interaction problems between Windows 2000 drivers and NT 4.0 drivers in Point and Print environments, HP is recommending, for users who plan to Point and Print between Windows 2000 and NT 4.0, that the NT 4.0 PostScript driver be reloaded on Windows 2000.

Hewlett-Packard PCL drivers (user intervention required)
HP NT 4.0 drivers will be upgraded to Microsoft Windows 2000 Unidrive5 drivers with no user intervention if the driver model name matches the existing Microsoft NT 4.0 driver name. In this situation, the HP driver is treated exactly the same as the Microsoft driver. Due to interaction problems between Windows 2000 drivers and NT 4.0 drivers in Point and Print environments, HP recommends that the NT 4.0 driver be reloaded on Windows 2000. This applies to users who plan to use Point and Print between Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0, (See the Point and Print section of this paper for further details about, and supported configurations for, Point and Print with Windows 2000.)

Blocked HP PCL drivers (user intervention required)
Microsoft designed the upgrade path from Windows NT 4.0 so that drivers other than Microsoft Unidrive5 and PostScript would simply be installed on the new operating system unchanged, as long as the drivers passed Windows 2000 compatibility testing. In order to enforce the Windows 2000 compatibility requirements for Windows NT 4.0 drivers, Microsoft has built in a driver-blocking mechanism that disqualifies Windows NT 4.0 drivers that do not meet the stated requirements. For many Windows NT 4.0 HP LaserJet drivers, compatibility with Windows 2000 was not determined until the drivers had been fully tested in the new environment, and changes were made to meet Microsoft's requirements for compatibility with the new platform.
All HP LaserJet drivers received compatibility status as of 27-Nov-1999. An HP driver can be installed on the new operating system as part of the upgrade process if the date it was last modified was later than 27-Nov-1999. Drivers on systems with dates earlier than 27-Nov-1999, and that are included in Microsoft's list of blocked drivers (see below), will be replaced by a mapped Unidrive5 driver. To obtain these certified drivers, download the appropriate driver or the installation utility from the HP Windows 2000 Web site. If the HP LaserJet drivers for any of the following products on the Windows NT 4.0 system were obtained after 27-Nov-1999, the drivers will be carried through the upgrade process without being altered or replaced.

Point and Print for Windows 2000
This section describes the Point and Print feature, explains methods of installing printer drivers and shared printers for Point and Print, and discusses using Point and Print.
Using HP printer drivers and Point and Print
Point and Print is a feature that allows system administrators to automatically provide printing to a shared printer resource on a server. The Windows Resource Kits contain documentation and instructions for installing Point and Print printer drivers. There are no additional instructions needed to install HP printer drivers for Point and Print.
Currently, HP printer drivers do not support the Alpha platform. If the client is running the Alpha version of Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft must provide the printer drivers. These drivers are provided in the operating system CD and are supported by Microsoft. If a printer model is not in the list of available printers in the Alpha version of Windows 2000, please contact Microsoft support for a driver.
Installing printer drivers on a server for Point and Print
Follow these steps to install printer drivers on a server for Point and Print.
- Install the HP LaserJet driver.
- In the Printer folder, select the Printer icon. In Printer Properties, select the Sharing tab and enter the share name of the printer. Click Additional Drivers, and a dialog box will appear. This dialog box will allow the server administrator to add drivers for the current printer model. These drivers can later be installed on clients running different versions of Windows operating systems.
- Select the operating system for the driver and click OK. The Installation Wizard then guides the administrator through the steps for installing each driver.
Installing a shared printer on a client for Point and Print
Once the drivers are set up on the server, the client can Point and Print to a printer in two ways. The first way is to drag-and-drop a shared printer icon from the Network Neighborhood into the Printers folder. The second way is to add a network printer using the Add Printer Wizard.
Drag-and-drop method
Select the Printer icon and drag it into the Printers folder. Windows will then set up the printer for Point and Print with no further user interaction required. The installation is complete when the Printers folder contains the Printer icon.
Add Printer Wizard method
Follow these steps to add a network printer using the Add Printer Wizard.
- In the Printers window, click the Add Printer icon. When the Add Printer Wizard appears, click the Next button to proceed.
- Click Network printer, and Next.
- Locate the printer by typing the name or by browsing.
- Specify the printer as the default printer, if desired.
Point and Print from Windows 2000 server to Windows 2000 Professional
Expected driver behavior
Once the printer has been successfully installed on the client, Point and Print provides the client printer with the configuration of the server printer for Printer Properties. This includes settings for Installable Options and certain job processing features. However, it does not have the ability to change settings that specify how a particular job is printed. (These settings are located in the Printing Preferences dialog box for the printer.) As a result, the settings on the server for features, such as Pages per Sheet, ZoomSmart, or Resolution will not be reflected on the client's copy of the printer. This is a change from the Point and Print functionality from a Windows NT 4.0 server to a Windows NT 4.0 client.
Point and Print from Windows 2000 server to Windows NT 4.0 workstation
Expected driver behavior
Setting up HP printer drivers on a Windows 2000 server for Point and Print to Windows NT 4.0 is generally the same as for Windows 2000. However, there are a couple of specific differences.
As Figure 1 shows, the Printer Properties, Sharing, Additional Drivers dialog box contains two entries under the Intel environment for Windows 2000 drivers.
Figure 1: Additional Drivers dialog box

One version is titled "Windows 2000" and the other is titled "Windows NT 4.0 or 2000." If "Windows 2000" is checked before any additional drivers are loaded, it means the server is currently running a driver written specifically for the Windows 2000 platform. That driver cannot be vended out to a Windows NT 4.0 client for Point and Print functionality. Microsoft refers to such drivers as Version3 drivers. If "Windows NT 4.0 or 2000" is checked, it means that the driver running on the server is a Windows NT 4.0 driver that is running under Windows 2000. Microsoft calls these drivers Version2 drivers. In this case, no additional drivers are required to support Point and Print to Windows NT 4.0 client computers.
Server running Version3 driver
When a driver written specifically for the Windows 2000 platform (Version3 driver) is loaded on the server, a Windows NT 4.0 (Version2) driver with the same model name will have to be loaded in order to Point and Print to Windows NT 4.0 clients. Having these two versions may cause problems if using this driver combination to Point and Print from a Windows 2000 server to Windows NT 4.0 client. Some internal data structures in Version3 and Version2 drivers cause conflicts, which cause the setting information from the server to be unavailable on the Windows NT 4.0 client. As a result, the Point and Print connection will allow the client to print, but not to access any configuration information that has been set up on the server.
Server running Version2 driver
When the server has a Version2 driver loaded as its primary driver, no additional drivers need to be loaded to support Point and Print to either Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0 clients. Further, since the driver being vended to the clients is the exact same driver that is being used by the server, there are no compatibility issues between the Windows 2000 server and Windows NT 4.0 clients. Once the Version2 driver has been loaded on the Windows 2000 Server, and the installed printer has been shared through the Printer Properties, Sharing tab, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 clients can connect the shared printer by either method described above.
All of the HP Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 drivers are Version2 drivers. HP recommends using these drivers as a solution to support Point and Print between Windows 2000, NT 4.0, and 9x platforms.
Point and Print from Windows 2000 to Windows 95 or 98
Expected driver behavior
In order for Point and Print to function from Windows 2000 servers to Windows 95 or 98 clients, the printer driver for the clients must be loaded on the server using the procedure described above. The driver model name of the Windows 95 or 98 driver loaded on the server must match the model name of the driver of the printer being shared. As mentioned above, HP is providing driver bundles on its Web site that support Point and Print for Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 9x platforms. The behavior for Point and Print from Windows 2000 to Windows 95 or 98 differs from the previously described configurations, in that no configuration settings are vended from the server to the client. The client user will have to configure the driver to match the physical device after installation.
Either the drag-and-drop method or the Add Printer Wizard method can accomplish installation on the client.
Windows 2000 terminal server and HP printer drivers
This section describes the Windows 2000 terminal server and discusses its use with HP LaserJet printers.
Terminal server description
Windows terminal server is an extension to the Windows NT and Windows 2000 server product lines. It provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for different desktop machines through terminal emulation. This allows companies that want to run applications remotely on a server to be able to deliver 32-bit Windows capabilities to a wide range of legacy desktop hardware devices using the familiar Windows user interface.
Terminal server and HP LaserJet printer products
HP will provide full-featured Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 terminal server printer drivers for HP LaserJet printers beginning with the HP LaserJet 4 family of printers. These HP full-featured drivers are in addition to the Unidrive5 printer drivers provided in the Windows 2000 operating system. The basic printer drivers provided in the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system will support all printers released before the HP LaserJet 4 family.
Hewlett-Packard recommends configuring Windows terminal server with HP LaserJet drivers loaded on the server and vended to the client terminals when logging on. If HP LaserJet printer drivers are installed directly on the client terminals while logged into the server, the drivers will be deleted when the client is logged off. The printer driver will not be present at the next logon to the server.
